The ego within has decided that someone else out there, besides my wife, might actually be interested in hearing the confusing thoughts that swirl in my brain and my first-hand experiences being involved in so many businesses, so welcome to my newsletter.
I shouldn’t start with a lie. My wife definitely does not want to hear what I have to say on business - she couldn’t give a damn!
My commitment to you
I will write once a week and send out each new edition on a Tuesday. If this is well received, I may introduce more content further down the line, but being honest, committing to writing a post every week is daunting enough right now - I am a video guy and typically avoid writing at all costs!
I have such a passion, more an obsession, with business. It’s my job, my calling, my hobby. With that comes a hunger and commitment to continual learning. I hope that together we can build a community of like-minded business nuts and share ideas and experiences, so please do reply and comment to let me know someone is out there…
What this will cover
My experience is grounded in small and medium-sized businesses, so this is who will get the most from the topics I cover, but much of this applies to businesses of any size.
Due to my background (see below), a lot of what I talk about will centre on finance but It will broadly fall into one of three categories:
Tax* - Tax saving tips and techniques, changes in the tax rules and delving deeper into some of the less well-known areas impacting SMEs.
Tech - I am a huge tech lover, early adopter and co-founder of my own SaaS, so I talk a lot about this. I will share what works for me and the latest tech I have been playing with, all from the point of view of someone who can’t code!
Tactics - Broadly covering any other topics that come to mind from understanding your numbers, to growth strategies.
*Caveat - this stuff will only apply to UK businesses and will probably be out of date before you read it so take advice from a professional on your specific circumstances!
A bit about me
I have been running my own accountancy business in the UK for over 10 years. We have worked with hundreds of companies so I have had insight very few people get into what has made these businesses successful and the issues they have come up against.
We work with two types of businesses in my accountancy business, Crisp Accountancy. The owner-managed business and the investor-led scale-ups. Both have common issues, but each face very specific problems.
My role with clients now is that of a fractional CFO, primarily for our investor-led scale-ups within the tech, SaaS and eCommerce industries. I have helped businesses start up, scale, raise investment and exit.
Last year I also co-founded my own SaaS startup, Vaulta, Financial dashboards for accountancy practices. This has been a case of practising what I preach to some extent and a really exciting journey that I will share with you.
If you have got this far down the page, thank you. I really do hope you find my insights useful. Please help to spread the word!
